Whales of Perth – 13/11/24

Whales of Perth were shuffling through the sighting grounds today with mums, calves and even a male escort spotted. A beautiful morning it was to begin our day with a light easterly breeze and warm sunshine beaming down on us as we went out to meet the whales of Perth in the sheltered waters just off the coastline.

It wasn’t long until we came across a lovely mum and calf cruising along looking for a quiet place to rest.

The young calf had to come up a lot more regularly than mum as his lung capacity is a lot smaller than an adult Humpback Whales, each time he surfaced he stayed on the surface a lot longer then he needed to as he was having a good look at us.

Mum was very trusting and came right over to us with her beautiful little baby, our whale paparazzi Katie was very happy to get some close up snaps of mum and her fluke so we can add her to our ID catalogue.

Mumma whale did not disappoint with many stunning tail dives to make sure we captured the perfect shot to add to our research, after a while spent with mum and calf we started to head back and were very eager to see who we would meet this afternoon.

As we ventured back out again on our midday tour we saw a little bit of white water ahead so made our way towards that direction. The culprits were a mother and her calf with a cheeky male escort making some room around them so they could rest. A few tail slaps and a large tail lob worked perfectly as a nearby mum and calf shuffled out of their way understanding that this pod wanted more room around them to relax in and a bigger reactionary distance.

These three amigos were very relaxed and enjoyed our company as a few pods close by did the same, we built trust with them while we sat and watched the young calf trying to lay on top of mum when she came up to surface.

The escort male kept his distance from mum and calf but was right there ready to protect, as we started to leave them he slowly poked his head out of the water to make sure we weren’t thinking about trying to swim aware with his female.

It was a lovely day out with the whales of Perth as we enjoy the last couple of weeks with the Humpback Whales and the epic season that 2024 has been.
