There are some days when you do not need to go far to bump into whales.
This morning, we could already see, driving down to the harbor, you could spot the blows from shore.
However, the reality blew our minds. We went out, and there were whales everywhere. Orcas, where the eye could see, groups of Humpback Whales, and even Fin Whales later during the day.
We spent the whole day in front of Skjervøy (some orcas were right by the harbor entrance) watching these incredible animals.
We have witnessed that they were feeding many times.
Commercial herring fishery is still only allowed further out, so whenever they were feeding, it was natural, not by a fishing vessel.
It is still incredible to witness how the Fin Whale’s behavior has evolved over the past years. 3-4 years ago, they were much more shy. These days, they always appear in the middle of the action.
We saw several orca families, and I was busy doing as many identification photos for the Norwegian Orca Survey as possible to know who the ones regularly return and if we have new ones in the area. There were several groups in the area today.
