As we headed up the Homfray Channel, on our way to Stuart Island, we came an across a pod of Biggs Orcas. Stopping the boat, we watched as the family of 4 passed by us…based on the male’s dorsal fin I believe this may be the T123s. T123 “Sydney” (the matriarch), T123A “Stanley”, T123C “Lucky”, and T123D “Darcy”. Biggs (aka Transient) are an ecotype of orca that is found primarily in the PNW. They are stealthy hunters whose diet consists of seals, sea lions, porpoises, and sometimes other whales.
They were traveling at a fairly good pace into Homfray Channel from the direction of Toba inlet. As they went past and then surfaced at a little further SE of us, it appeared that they might be hunting, as the four had split up at that point. We didn’t want to disturb so we watched until they disappeared and then headed on our way.
