Today, we finished our 2023/2024 whale-watching season here in northern Norway.
It has been a fantastic season with many unexpected visitors
Last week, one of them was a solitary walrus that visited the inner part of Skjervøy harbor for a snooze.
I intentionally did not post the photos then so it does not draw extra attention to the animal.
It was a young walrus, clearly trying to get some rest in our little town, and it had already drawn enough visitors
The animal appeared in good shape and had been seen only once. Hopefully, the walrus is doing well and will swim further north towards his home range (Svalbard).
In the past few days, we have seen MANY sperm whales still inside the fjord. One of them was unique from the others.
This individual whale had strange coloration on his body, from below the dorsal fin all the way to his tail fluke. I don’t know why the pigmentation changed, but it may have been a young animal.
It was fascinating to see orcas, humpbacks, fins, and sperm whales regularly this season; some days, we even had The Big Four of the North!
Who knows what next year will bring?
We are eager to find out!
We want to thank everyone for your cooperation and look forward to seeing you all next year!
Cheers
See you all in the summer, from Bleik!
