The Bond Between Females and Calves – 23/6/23

We came across a group of Pilot Whales today.

It is so amazing to see the intimate bond between females and calves.

They swim most of the time side by side, visibly touching each other.

One calf got tired, stayed behind the group a little, and floated on the surface for 1-2 minutes. It got tired.

The mother immediately turned back and “picked up” her calf, who joined back next to her tail. It is easier for calves to swim in the mother’s slipstream next to the tail as they get pulled.

You may also notice a slight brownish coloration on pilot whale calves, as we know that orca calves have similar coloration.

The pilot whales were feeding and, later on, resting/socializing.

Enjoy!
