Today, we had a fantastic day at sea, and our guests were treated to 4 different species.

We have seen orcas, humpbacks, fins, and sperm whales.

Sperm whales are usually not expected during the wintertime in this area, but surprisingly, this season, we see quite a lot of them.

Usually, you can find sperm whales in the deeper waters of Vesterålen and Bleik Canyon. The water is 1000 – 2000 meters deep; in comparison, the fjord here (where we found them) is around 300 meters deep.

It is unlikely that sperm whales would feed on the herring, just as the other three species. They are probably interested in the flatfish in the area, which is plentiful—for example, halibut.

Seeing four different species in the stunning light of January was incredible.

Yesterday, we spent most of the day with a large group (40+) of humpback whales.

Enjoy!
