Lindsay C. is one of the co-founders of Whale Tales and the Social Media Coordinator-if you’ve interacted with us on social media you’ve talked to her!
Where did your whale love start?
I’m not even sure! Definitely as a child, I have distinct memories starting around 12 of collecting and loving dolphins, a love that was only fueled by “A Ring of Endless Light” by Madeline L’Engle. As my biology education continued my love grew to cover all cetaceans.
What current ocean conservation issue do you feel most strongly about?
Preventing entanglement and reducing plastic waste are definitely on the forefront at the moment. The more numbers I hear about plastic waste the more I want to get the word out on alternatives.
What have you changed in your life to help save whales?
I report all my sightings and photos to BCCSN, Happywhale and the Porpoise Conservation Society. I use reuseable straws and try to limit my other single plastic use especially coffee cups and plastic bottles. I keep an eye out for plastic in lotions, shampoos etc, and try to buy green products.
What advice would you give to others to take steps in their lives to help whales?
Remember that every step helps, whether you live by the water or not. Reducing plastic, reusing what you can and composting are great next steps after recycling. Looking out for microplastics and eating sustainable seafood are other easy choices to help whales, marine animals and all other animals.
Any whale tales to share?
I’m working on putting up all the ones we have already! My favorite personal ones are the Baird’s Beaked Whales in Monterey, Risso’s Dolphins off Vancouver Island and Humpbacks and Dolphins in Maui!
