Special Encounter with Fraser’s Dolphins – 8/25

We got spoiled with Fraser’s Dolphins today in the field in St. Vincent and the Grenadines! One of the coolest dolphins ever.

They usually form very tight groups of at least 80-100 individuals. Since they are nighttime foragers, we mostly see them socializing and traveling during the day. Other species often join them to form mixed-species groups, particularly Pantropical Spotted Dolphins and sometimes Spinner Dolphins.

We encountered them during a research project on the ecology of cetaceans in St. Vincent and the grenadines. We conduct small-boat surveys and use photo-identification, acoustics, and tagging to investigate the ecology and behavior of poorly known cetaceans in the eastern Caribbean region.

They are just so special!
