Jolly January – 21/1/23

Last year, January was busy. We had feedings on the 22nd and the 26th…

Luckily, this year proves to be very similar to 2022.

Today marks the end of Polar Night. The Sun has risen above the Horizon after 2 months for the first time. Unfortunately, we did not see it; it was hidden by a few clouds. We have come across a feeding with loads of orcas and humpback whales today.

It was a crazy one.

Orcas and humpback whales were everywhere. Herring were jumping out of the water, and in between, the feeding orcas were spy-hopping constantly next to the boat!

I managed to capture multiple animals’ “faces” (head), and you can see all the different facial characteristics of the orcas.

They all have different head shapes and eye patches.

You may also notice when a fully grown male was spy-hopping from the size of their heads, enormous.

A juvenile orca got pretty offended when a seagull picked up the herring it was aiming for You can see the disappointment on the orca.

Today was a day to remember.

Let’s hope for a few more good days. Looks like there are still plenty of herring around.

Enjoy!
