We had stormy days (due to a substantial low pressure in the Northern regions of Norway) in the past few days, so we were on land for a few days.
However, yesterday and today, we got to go again.
The fjord is still full of life, and the number of sperm whales remains relatively high.
Sometimes, we even see them in smaller groups.
They have slightly different behavior than in the summertime. They spend more time on the surface, often get curious about the boat, and dive for a shorter amount of time.
The main two species of the past few days were orcas and sperm whales.
After observing sperm whales, we went to look for orcas, and not long after, we found a pod.
They were traveling in the area. The group had three fully grown males, who seemed to hang out together and swam side by side.
One of them also appeared to be “babysitting” for a while and had a juvenile in tow.
Males orcas are known to help females with calves so the females can also have some quiet time.
Although we are already close to January, fishing is not in full power compared to previous seasons. There were a few commercial fishing vessels in the area, but as the herring entered two locations this season, the fishing happened in two locations. Some vessels decided to fish close to Alta.
It will be interesting to see how this affects the end of the season.
We should continue to see 3 or 4 different species on our trips in the coming weeks.
Enjoy!
