We left from Steveston and it was raining on the way down, an amazing West Coast afternoon. The morning boats had been unable to see the whales because of heavy fog but by they time we got down there, the fog had lifted. Most other boats had gone home so we were alone with the whales. The adults were resting while juveniles played in the waves around them. The adults were vocalizing at the surface, something I had never heard before! I have never seen them this relaxed and it was awesome to hear them chit chat while the others splashed around.
