Incredible Encounter with Clamp’s Calf – 22/6/24

I’ve been on vacation for the past week and have spent a lot of my time out at sea. There’s nowhere else I’d rather spend my time – especially considering the heat wave that we’ve been dealing with.

This afternoon’s trip was my last for the week as I need to catch my breath a bit to prepare for work on Monday. I could not have asked for a better way to end my vacation. It was absolutely incredible!

As we approached the feeding ground, we could see this young calf breaching in the distance. He was quickly identified as Clamp’s 2024 calf and he continued this behavior throughout our entire encounter. All while mom NA-0940 “Clamp” was busy feeding to sustain herself and her growing calf. Clamp really has her “fins” full with this one. The energy of this youngster was absolutely mind boggling! He was still going strong as we headed back to the harbor!

I have to say, I began whale watching in 2001 and I still go out as much as I can to this day. My passion for it is as strong as ever. Why? For moments like this! He shocked us all by breaching just feet off the bow as we sat idle. What a breathtaking sight!

Huge thank you to Cape Ann Whale Watch for an amazing week of whales! You guys rock!
