I have been itching to line up an evening trip to Ucluelet to photograph the humpback whales at sunset for a few years now – today, Celine and I were able to make the trip after a bird watching session!
Late January, February and into March, large gatherings of humpback whales, migrating, feeding, and waiting for herring can be seen from the Wild Pacific Trail and Amphitrite Lighthouse in Ucluelet. It’s the best land based whale watching in our area!

Starting soon, gray whales will also be migrating past our coastline and coming into the Sound to feed on herring eggs.
It’s no wonder Spring is my favourite time of year!
