Humpback in Laguna! 7/9/21

I’m a tidepool educator so I was at my shift. I had previously seen dolphins that day, so I looked up when I saw something in the water again – turns out it was a whale fin! It came out of the water rather abruptly, almost looked like a big surfboard coming out of the water.

Let me tell you – my jaw was on the ground I couldn’t believe it haha. I’ve heard of people seeing grey whales close to shore, but not humpbacks out here, so I was very surprised (and concerned at first).

The whale looked juvenile based on size. He (or she) looked to be rolling in the kelp beds close to shore. My guess was playing since it’s a young one. Watched him surface w/ spray twice on his way back out to deeper water..
