Our first time out on the tenders during our week on Silver Bank we encountered a trio consisting of a female and two males.
One male was most likely already the established escort while the other male, known as a challenger, was trying to take over that job. Seeing these large animals battle like this is an amazing sight.
Their flippers and flukes become dangerous weapons as they try to hit each other.
At one point they both surged to the surface and it appeared that one was trying to land on top of the other.
The “gentle giants” that we know up on the feeding grounds are anything but that when mating rights are on the line!
