Here is a whale of a tail ????
So this fall, in particular in the later stages of December, we encountered BCZ0131 “Gnarly” a number of times.
Our last viewing of Gnarly was in Oct 2015 and we actually thought Gnarly had stopped coming to the Salish Sea.
Yet Gnarly showed up again this fall.
The last recorded encounter with Gnarly in the Salish Sea according to Happy Whale was in 2016.
Gnarly was first reported in our area by Cascadia Research on the 26th of August 1990 near La Perouse Bank, BC.
He was spotted again by Cascadia Research near Switftsure Bank on 6th of July 1996.
According to Happy Whale, Gnarly spends the winter in and around Mexico.
Gnarly’s tail is easy to recognize, with its distinctive pattern and shape.
