First Proper Harbour Porpoise Sightings in 2018! – 2/18/18

The Porpoise Conservation Society is conducting photo identification of Harbour Porpoise in collaboration with Pacific Mammal Research in Washington, as part of a long-term study designed to learn more about our smallest local cetaceans.

We need perfect conditions: near-calm seas, no fog, no rain — and that was hard to get this year! But mid-February, we finally got lucky.

These are the first pictures taken by our volunteers. A fairly large group (for Harbour Porpoise) of 5-6 animals traveled through our study zone and got close enough to take pictures.

This definitely made our day after having had to cancel so many potential field days due to weather!
