We had an unexpected day and fascinating day today.
For around five days the past week, we have had the privilege to see only sperm whales around Skjervøy. There are quite a few individuals in the area. We had days when we counted over 15 sperm whales in the area.
However, as we got closer to the end of the season, we had at least five days without orca sightings. Last year, we saw them until early February. Three years ago, it was similar to now. Every year is different.
However, we found orcas today and yesterday, which was already unexpected, but it was even more unbelievable because we found ourselves in the middle of a feeding. I can’t help but think that tomorrow is a full moon again, so it might influence what has happened in the past two days.
On both days, we saw orcas, humpbacks, fins, and sperm whales.
The Polar Night is already over, and after a few cloudy days, we finally saw the sun today. With a little bit of swell and this fantastic light it was stunning to see and photograph the sperm whales
I love the photo when the sperm whale’s whole body is above the horizon with mesmerizing light
We still have tours until the end of January. Let’s see what the next few days bring.
Enjoy!
