Birth of a Bigg’s (Transient) Calf! -6/8/15

Around 730 at night, about 100 feet offshore of East Point (near where the boats are anchored) we spotted 3 Bigg’s (Transient) Killer Whales.  A small, juvenile female, a medium sized female and a very large female with seemingly no white markings.

They circled around for about 30 minutes, looking like they were feeding-the small one then got very exciting splashing up and down at right angles underneath the large female. The large female was getting quite agitated about every 10 seconds-she was breathing very hard, giving off huge flumes.

There was a ton of commotion, lots of water flying around and then all of a sudden it was quiet.  We could see that something had appeared but it wasn’t until later, looking at the pictures that we could confirm that it was a new calf!  Shortly afterwards the boats moved in and the whales moved off but it was truly an amazing sight to see!
