Angel Delight – 16/7/25

Angel is a humpback whale with a beautiful and incredibly distinctive tail. According to Happy Whale this individual has only been seen around Iceland so we do not know where it breeds. I was the first person to spot this whale in Iceland as far as I know and I was so amazed when I saw this tail for the first time. It is so stunning. I had many ideas of what to call it, Wings, Butterfly, but in the end I went for Angel on Happywhale.

Angel was first seen in 2022 here in the Westfjords of Iceland from our boat leaving out of Holmavik. Since then we have seen this whale regularly and it was around a lot last year.

Now in 2025 Angel has also been in the area a lot and delighting our passengers. We have seen it on and off since June and all the way through July. Angel has been quite surface active as well as being an amazing lunge feeder, coming far out of the water when it lunges.

On the 16th July Angel was very close to our home port and we only had to travel for about five minutes to see it!

It treated us to some amazing lunges as it fed on probably sand eels and also did a couple of fantastic tail-throws.

We also had some white-beaked dolphins on this tour and something very rare indeed, Icelandic sunshine!
