Even with guidelines and laws, sometimes it’s just not up to you if a whale wants to come have a look! There are a few matrilines on the coast that exhibit curious behaviour towards boats more than others and the T36Bs are definitely one of them! Yesterday while we were shut down watching the family feed on a seal, T36B1 broke from the group and came towards us. We were right near the mouth of the Fraser River so the water was very murky near the surface so this 10 year old kept peeking its eye above the water looking straight at us.
It should be noted that this is a fairly rare situation and should not try to be forced. Respect the whales space and, every once in a while, their curiosity about us matches ours about them.
