When I asked the Universe for ‘good whales’, for my birthday it apparently took that as a personal challenge and said “Hold my beer.” ๐

Almost 3 HOURS of being mugged!!! ๐ฑ๐คฏ

Mugging is my FAVOURITE behaviour because the whales get close, get curious, and stick around. But I have NEVER been mugged for this period of time. Talk about special. ๐๐
We started off with 2 whales and then were joined by a third. And they swam around and below the boat dozens of times.

If they swam off a bit, it wasn’t anymore than a pool length and then they’d come straight back in again. But most of their time was spent super close to the boat.
To give you an idea of how close they were, you can see whale lice and their stubbly hairs on their lower jaw! (Yes, whales have hair.)

The crazy part was we barely entered the Bay – we first came across 2 of the 3 on some shallow banks just off Moon Point on K’gari. THEN, on the way back in, we came across 2 whales near Round Island – less than 10 mins from the marina! ๐คฏ
A ‘good’ whale is a visible whale, one spending time on the surface so we can watch them doing their whale thing.
We were absolutely BLESSED.
These encounters are on the whale’s terms. If they want to leave, they can absolutely do that. But then you get whales like the ones we had who stay close to the boat and choose to keep coming back.
It’s their choice. Always.
And it’s damn humbling and warm-fuzzy inducing that they DO choose to spend so much time with us and interact with us. ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ
I am dying to know what they’re thinking when they lookup at us like that!
Also, I lost count of the number of times we copped fishy whale breath to the face and/or camera lens. ๐ It was just unfortunate the wind was blowing that way last weekend. ๐ (@digophotography1ย knows what I’m talking about! The lens cleaning cloth got a workout that day! ๐)
I’m itching to get back out again. Happy whale watching season! ๐ซถ
