Seeing a blue whale has been one of my dreams for a long time. I’ve been lucky enough to see a lot of whales in my life but a huge blue has to be an incredible sight. The largest animal that has ever lived on our planet. I could almost imagine how fascinating that would be. I found out when and where there was a good chance of seeing a blue whale. So we decided to go on vacation to the Azores and took the beautiful island of Pico in April 2019. Pico Island is home to over 20 species of whales and dolphins and in spring you might be lucky to meet blue whales, fin whales, humpnack whales and sei whales. As we arrived we booked immediately our first Whale watching tour for the next day.
After one hour we saw two fin whales for a short time. It was absolutely fantastic. But than the guide said he saw a big blow in the distance. As we got closer we saw the blue color beneath the surface. I freaked out. Could it actually be on our first trip? The guide screamed out: “It’s a blue!”.
I was so happy that words cannot describe. We followed him for a while.
Every time he came to the surface it was exciting.
That little piece of what you can see of him is so incredibly big. Really impressive and tears of joy ran down my face ????
