Amazing Whale Watching Experience – 3/9/25

I went on a school trip to Tadoussac, a hub in Quebec for whale watching in the Saint Lawrence river. After visiting the whale interpretation center, we went on an excursion to go see whales, accompanied by naturalists.

After a ride of about forty five minutes, we saw a blue whale blow in the distance. We slowed down, then stopped. Barely a few seconds later, a second blue whale appeared, only a few meters from the boat! It stayed at the surface for a few minutes, breathing five or six times. It was incredible!

After it went back down below the surface, we saw two humpback whales who were traveling together. They both dived, one after the other, clearly showing their fluke. We saw them do this twice, as they came back up and dived a second time.

Later, we saw that first blue whale again (the one we saw from a distance) and we saw it dive, also showing it’s fluke! This individual is one of the few who does this regularly, as blue whales tend to not show the fluke as they dive. It is particularly recognizable due to this habit.

Our time was up so we had to be headed back to shore, but as we were about to leave a fin whale (the second largest species of whales) appeared to our right. We only saw it breathe a few times before it dived, and then we had to leave.

This was an amazing experience, I had never expected to see so many incredible whales!
