A Rare Calm Day – 11/6/24

A rare calm day spent in the company of playful Icelandic orcas.

Orca sightings this season have been somewhat more sporadic than some seasons here off west Iceland as we seem to have less herring around than some seasons. Herring is their main food.

But we still manage to find some orcas regularly and as we are the only boat searching for them, our success rate is still quite incredible. Being the only boat with the orcas, something you do not get almost anywhere else that has orcas, is such a treat.

On this day many of the orcas, 6 pods in all that we saw, were in playful mood. One adult male lay upside down and splashed his rather beautifully marked tail on the water a number of times.

We also had juveniles and calves coming over to check us out a number of times, before they swam back over to the adults, almost like a game of chicken.

With unusually calm seas for our area, it was a joy to be out there with Iceland’s beautiful Snaefellsnes Peninsula as a backdrop.
