A Humpback Placenta! – 12/23

During one of our tours one morning sailing on the Pacific side in Cabo San Lucas, we encountered a mother and her calf very close to the coast. We noticed that the calf was very small and assumed it was newborn, so we decided to keep our distance to avoid disturbing them.

After about 300 yards of sailing, we came across something quite strange that we initially thought was a balloon. As we got closer, we realized that it was actually a placenta.

Due to its color, it appeared to be in a fresh state and had a consistency similar to that of an intestine. It also resembled a parachute.

Without a doubt, it has been one of our most incredible natural experiences.

Afterwards, we sent the pictures of the placenta to the researchers from UABCS university (Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur) to confirm our suspicions, and we received a positive confirmation.

We are thrilled to share this incredible story!

I assume this is quite rare so did you take any samples (or even the entire) of the placenta for research?

Just curious to know what you did with it? Did you take it for research or let it become one with nature?

they were unable to get any samples but they did photograph it and send it to researchers.
