A Breaching Northern Right Whale Dolphin! – 4/5/26

Today the stars aligned and I captured a shot I’ve been hoping for ever since I first encountered this species! There were 5,000+ Northern right whale dolphin scattered all across the bay yesterday. It was our last encounter with part of that scattered super pod when I finally got the shot! For about 10 minutes I was watching and focused on the swell as it rose and blended with the sky. With each crest of the swell I would scan and try and focus on any dolphin at the top of the swell in hopes that one would breach. There had been scattered breaching in the pod but most were much too far in the distance to get a good shot. Just as we were getting our last looks at the pod, this dolphin flew right into my frame as I was focused on the swell!

Yesterday’s trip was magical for many reasons, and finally getting this shot of a Northern right whale dolphin flying into the sky is one of them!
