Last night we were lucky to encounter pilot whales under the Midnight Sun.

The sky was clear; we saw no clouds at all.

Usually, when the sky is so clear, it comes with a bit of wind, and we already know that whales and dolphins love to play in the waves.

A juvenile pilot whale decided to breach right next to the boat.

The photo is not the best that has ever been taken, but I am still satisfied knowing there were waves, and I had no way of knowing where it would pop up

You can see the whale’s body and how strong it is.

The pectoral fins are also visible, and you can see that they are pretty long. Pilot whales have two different types, long-finned and short-finned pilot whales. The length refers to the animal’s pectoral fin. These guys here in the North are long-finned pilot whales.

Breaching is always fun, but we don’t fully understand why the animals do it. It could be a form of communication, to get rid of parasites, or just for fun.

Enjoy!
