A Big Leap from “Ember” – 25/6/26

It’s rare enough to be in the right place at the right time to witness such a display of power from orcas, but even more difficult to capture it on camera as these high leaps are often rather unpredictable. This was the first of two leaps by T064B “Ember” early this morning as her family was pursuing a Dall’s porpoise along with T065A3 “Amir” in Blackfish Sound. The porpoise escaped, but only after a few minutes of pretty energetic pursuit!

Here’s a photo from the second hunting leap made by T064B “Ember” this morning. Not only was she hot on the heels of a Dall’s porpoise, but her grandchild T064B1A “Spark” was just beneath her, joining in on the hunt.
