Beluga

Beluga Whales have been fondly called “canaries of the sea” due to the hundreds of various vocalizations they’ve been recorded producing. One of three whale species who can live their whole life in the Arctic they are very well adapted for chilly environments. Their white colour especially helps to camouflage adults from polar-bear predators who stalk the ice searching for beluga breathing holes. As climate change continues to be felt most strongly in the Arctic we hope that the beluga does not also become a northern “canary in the coal mine”.
